If you’re asking, “Does having a well-organised laundry room add value to your home?” the answer is yes. Many houses in built-up areas lack the space for a dedicated european style laundry room.
If you are renovating a laundry room, you probably have a well-formed idea for the design and structure of the place. However, you can do much more than the basics and convert that small laundry room into a stylish space in your house.
So, we’ve got some functional laundry renovation ideas and all the laundry ideas you need to transform your existing laundry room into a user-friendly yet well-designed one.
Choose appliances like the washing machine and the dryer and work your way from there. Deciding which functional spaces in the laundry to select depends on the size of the room, budget, and unit style. When space is limited, investing in a dual-function washer and dryer would be sensible, which uses less floor space.
Ensure your dedicated laundry room has enough room to accommodate all your essentials.
If space is not a problem, indulge in two separate appliances for each function. Additionally, you can select between a top-loading washing machine and a front-loading one. If you plan on adding a bench on top, a front-loading washer will suit the laundry room better.
Functional space in your laundry area is one of the most essential things to consider when remodelling a laundry room. Likewise, renovating a laundry space may feel incomplete without adding storage solutions and cabinetry that hold all the essentials for washing laundry.
Start planning a layout first and consider whether a flat pack or custom cabinetry will be required to add some space-saving features to your home. If a full-fledged custom cabinetry layout is not your style at the moment, try adjusting a tall cupboard with open shelving in a corner.
The overhead cupboards store cleaning products and detergents that should be out of children’s and pets’ reach.
With this cupboard, at least you can hide utility items such as vacuum cleaners hidden away and save space. You can also consider getting a height-adjustable pull-out ironing board that can be folded away effortlessly or an ironing board that can be discretely hidden in its cabinet or utility room.
If you are someone who can keep the storage space neat, you may not need to keep the cleaning things in wall cabinets at all. Instead, you can design layers of open shelves to place everything directly.
Dirty clothes should be placed in designated pull out laundry hampers, clean clothes should be folded and placed on shelves or create more bench space, and everything else should be neatly tucked away in drawers and cupboards.
The only downside of this arrangement is that although they have enough space for your laundry items, they may collect dust quickly, and regular cleaning will become mandatory. Another option is doing away with all permanent custom cabinets and shelves and replacing them with washing baskets and attractive boxes. You can move these light boxes around whenever necessary, and several stylish options are available.
Believe it, laundry room remodels may result in drastic changes, but bad lighting can ruin the effect and render your designs invisible. Besides, doing the laundry in a dim room is challenging, and you won’t be able to see what you’re doing, not to mention the strain on your eyes trying to check whether the wet clothes are clean.
Consider adding good lighting under the cabinet along with the regular ceiling lights to prevent the formation of shadows. If possible, construct your new laundry room in a part of the house with plenty of natural lighting.
In addition, you might consider adding an exhaust fan or installing windows and a hanging rail so you can have hanging space for hanging clothes and let natural light in.
It will let fresh air in and help dry your clothes. If that’s not feasible, stick to simple lights and experiment with downlights if you want something fancier.
Walking on slippery floors in wet rooms can be risky, and neglecting proper waterproofing will end up causing you a bunch of problems. For instance, a floor that isn’t water-resistant will get damaged by water spills easily. Also, the floor tiles must be durable enough for traffic, even if a few people use the laundry room daily.
Wooden flooring is susceptible to water damage and discolouration, while ceramic or porcelain tiles are strong and waterproof. Thus, the latter will suit laundry rooms better, along with options like vinyl planks or tiles, which are the more economical options.
While at it, include mod cons like in-built laundry baskets, towel drying racks, ironing boards, and hanging rails. These small additions will create the most functional laundry room, ideal for a modern home.
Basic steel laundry sinks are a thing of the past, and you have no reason to resurrect them when plenty of stylish options are available. Sinks made of copper add a metallic touch to farmhouse sinks. While selecting a laundry room sink, ensure it is deep enough to allow for hand washing of small clothing items and towels, and fill up a mop bucket when required. If you have a deep sink in the laundry, you can avoid using your kitchen sink for practical and messy cleanups.
However, nowadays, washing machines let out wastewater through a systematic drain system, and laundry sink use is less frequent. Thus, if you are to install a sink, you might as well go for an aesthetically pleasing sink made of porcelain or smooth granite.
Ultimately, you can take your laundry room renovation to the next level by adding some or all of these essential features. Once these systems are in place, you probably won’t need to make any further changes for decades.
If you are still deciding where to locate your laundry room, we recommend placing it close to the bedrooms so that you don’t have to carry a laundry basket up and down the stairs every time you wash clothes.
So, while the upfront cost may seem high, consider the renovation an investment in time and money to create a more optimal functionality and trendy laundry room. Speak to your builder and obtain any required permits before you start planning a laundry layout for expert advice or expert tips.
It’s always a great way to decide on a renovation plan based on your tastes, budget, and requirements.
