Read Full StoryWhen it comes to decking materials, composite wood is growing in popularity as a waterproof alternative to traditional wood decking. Composite decking is designed to be water resistant and not absorb water like natural wood. This allows composite materials to better resist moisture and prevent decay. Unlike wood, composite decking systems are engineered not to warp, crack or splinter when exposed to water. With advanced decking technologies, composite boards provide a durable and low-maintenance decking solution that can stand up to the elements.
If you’re considering upgrading your deck, composite decking offers an attractive and waterproof option. Composite wood consists of a mixture of plastic and wood fibres or other filler materials to create a durable, weather-resistant decking material. The composite makeup allows the decking to resist moisture absorption and prevent water damage. When comparing decking systems, composite decking makes for an appealing choice that will hold up well compared to traditional wood. A composite deck boards can provide a beautiful yet waterproof outdoor living space.

A common question among Australians is whether composite decking or composite wood is waterproof. To put it simply, composite decking is not waterproof, and only synthetic materials have 100% waterproofing abilities.
However, most composite decking is designed to be water-repellent, and this feature allows the wood to be used for poolside decks, docks, or even a boathouse. It is also an ideal material for coastal regions since it can withstand salty and humid air.
In the case of real wood, it does not hold well against water and is not even remotely water-resistant or waterproof. If you want to waterproof the wood, you must use specific varnishing or painting.
When regular wood is exposed to excess water or high moisture levels, the conditions are ideal for mould growth, mildew, rot and greying, decreasing the overall lifespan of the wood. This is why choosing the right material for deck rebuilding or replacement is crucial.
Australia is known to have dynamic climate conditions, and such constant changes cause regular wooden deck boards to deteriorate quickly. When exposed to more water, organic wood expands and contracts until it changes shape.
To avoid this, you must protect your deck boards against warping or colour changes with regular maintenance. You will also have to assess each plank individually as they react differently. Specific wooden planks may bow while others may curl, and some can twist to the point of becoming frail.
Excess moisture can cause further damage to the wood by seeping through and loosening all the nails, brackets and screws. Instead of dealing with these problems, you can choose waterproof composite decking less prone to shrinkage or warping and requires low maintenance compared to real wood.
Compared to slickness, organic wood is more prone to being slippery when wet. This is because organic wood is only available in a single texture and does not have enough grip when wet.
On the other hand, composite decking can be purchased in several textures, especially skid or slip-resistant ones. A good grip is a mandatory requirement if the primary purpose of using these materials is to make a deck near a pool.
Imagine hosting a pool party that would escalate to a water fight on slippery decks. You would often fight with the floor rather than with fellow players.
A natural wooden deck board generally requires more care and repair for optimal functioning. Maintaining a wooden deck can be cumbersome, owing to sanding, painting and staining the wood every two years. Failure to do this can strip the water-resistant or moisture-absorption properties of the surface and cause further damage.
But capped composite decking already has water-resistant properties and does not need further maintenance. Its special additives and engineering-grade polymers ensure the deck stays intact for longer.
Waterproof composite decking is also ideal if you do not want to weatherproof your deck, making it affordable and hassle-free constantly.
If you look at short-term savings, organic wood costs less than composite wood decking. However, when considering long-term savings, composite decking is more valuable. This is because organic wood, though initially cheaper, will lead to higher repair costs, especially if you hire professionals.
Composite decking boards do not need as much repair work, weatherproofing, or intense maintenance to stay water-resistant. So, the higher installation price will make sense in the long run.
When it comes to the overall look of the decking boards, natural wood is the clear winner. Since organic wood can be refined and sanded to different colours, it is more versatile.
But several composite decking manufacturers offer products quite similar to wood. Though it may not look as good, such products do a decent job of making the place look aesthetically pleasing.
Composite wood is a pretty common material used for making decks and docks. Agreed, they are not 100% waterproof decking, but their high water resistance will provide you with functional yet durable decks.
Additionally, your feet will thank you for the lack of splinters and wood fibres that natural wood deck boards cannot avoid.
